Russian forces have confirmed one of its warships in the Black Sea has been destroyed by Ukraine‘s air force. Pictures and videos show the blast sending a giant fireball into the air.

Ukraine has reported carrying out the airstrike on the Crimean port town of Feodosia.

The commander of Ukraine‘s air force, Mykola Oleshchuk, stated that the airstrike destroyed a Russian Navy vessel known as the Novocherkask landing ship.

Sergei Aksyonov, Russia‘s appointed governor of Crimea, has stated that one person was killed and two others were injured in Ukraine‘s airstrike.

Videos shared on various Russian news platforms showed intense explosions and fires in the region, which has a population of about 69,000 people.

Oleshchuk wrote on Telegram: “And the fleet in Russia is getting smaller and smaller!

“Thanks to the Air Force pilots and everyone involved for the filigree work!”

Trains leaving the port town were rerouted, and street traffic was partially blocked as a result of the airstrike, according to the Crimean administration appointed by Russia.

Russia‘s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 drew widespread condemnation.

Aksyonov said: “All relevant emergency services are on site.”

He added: “Residents of several houses will be evacuated.”

Meanwhile, Ukranian officials have denied claims that Russian forces have seized the stronghold Mariinka, near the eastern city of Donestsk.

Russian Defence minister Sergei Shoigu said: “The assault detachments of the South group today completely liberated the settlement of Mariinka, which is five kilometres [three miles] south-west of Donetsk.

“For nine years, the armed forces of Ukraine have made a powerful fortified area, which is connected by underground passages. Each street has its own well-fortified and fairly well-protected structures from all attacks, both from the air and artillery, long-term firing points, complex underground communication systems.

“Thanks to the decisive actions of our servicemen, the fortified area has been cracked.”
