Secret Service agents tasked with protecting President Joe Biden‘s granddaughter Naomi Biden opened fire after three people attempted to break into an unmarked agency vehicle in Washington, D.C.

The agents saw three people breaking a window of the parked and unoccupied Secret Service vehicle while out with Naomi Biden in the Georgetown neighborhood on Sunday night. One of the agents opened fire using a service weapon, and it is believed that no one was struck by gunfire, the Secret Service said in a statement.

Two to three people fled the scene in a red vehicle, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Monday. The Secret Service has put out a regional bulletin to the Metropolitan Police Department to be on the lookout for the car.

Carjackings have been on the rise in Washington, D.C., surging 250% in the last five years. There have been over 750 reported carjackings this year, and 75% of carjackings in the city involved guns, according to Washington data. Motor vehicle theft is up 98% in 2023 compared to this time last year, with 6,112 reported incidents compared to 3,081 in 2022. Total property crime is up 25% from this time last year, and all crime is up 27%.

In early October, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked after three men held him at gunpoint and took his car in the Navy Yard neighborhood near Capitol Hill. It occurred outside of Cuellar’s apartment building where several other members live, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), Cuellar said.
