Attention all savvy moms looking to boost their food emergency preparedness. When it comes to long-term food storage, SPAM is a true underrated hero.

I did not always feel this way though. SPAM is a processed food nightmare and as someone who tries to eat healthy – it was hard to add it to my food storage list.

But, I did. Below are a few reasons why.

SPAM history statistics

This iconic canned meat has been a staple in pantries worldwide since its creation in 1937 by Hormel Foods. Developed as an affordable and convenient protein source during the Great Depression, SPAM gained global popularity during World War II as a key component of soldiers’ rations.

Today, SPAM remains a beloved food item in over 44 countries, with a staggering 12.8 cans consumed every second. Its popularity is particularly evident in Asia, where it has become a culinary sensation in countries like South Korea, the Philippines, and even in the U.S. state of Hawaii.

SPAM for food storage

When it comes to emergency food supplies, SPAM is a top contender. Its high fat and salt content, often cited as drawbacks for everyday consumption, make it an ideal survival food.

The sodium helps preserve the meat, while the fat provides essential calories during a crisis. Plus, SPAM’s indefinite shelf life (when the can is undamaged) makes it perfect for long-term storage.

To incorporate SPAM into your food storage plan, consider these delicious and easy recipe ideas:

  • SPAM Fried Rice: Savor the flavors of this quick and tasty dish, combining diced SPAM, eggs, and mixed vegetables with your favorite rice.
  • SPAM Musubi: Enjoy a Hawaiian favorite by creating a sushi-like treat with seasoned rice, fried SPAM, and nori seaweed.

While SPAM is not as cheap as it used to be – but what is – buying it in bulk is not a bad idea. It makes it cheaper and gives you enough to last through most emergencies.

SPAM is not good for long-term food storage, only short-term.

But first, here is an interesting video showing a can of SPAM from 1985 and 2022. Take note of the key used to open the 1985 can! It brings back memories right?

How to safely store SPAM

Remember, when stockpiling SPAM, store the cans in a cool, dry, and dark place to prevent the fats from going rancid and to ensure optimal shelf life.

Unfortunately, SPAM makes it to our list of foods you cannot dehydrate. The high content of fat makes it unsuitable for long term storage.

Here are the key details about the shelf life of SPAM:

Unopened Cans:
– SPAM has a shelf life of 2-5 years when stored in a cool, dry place like a pantry or cupboard away from heat sources.
– Unopened cans are best stored at a steady temperature between 50°F to 70°F.
– While SPAM cans have a “best-by” date of about 3 years after the manufacturing date, unopened cans can remain edible for up to 5 years if stored properly.

You should clean and purge your food prep storage closet at least once a year. Check those dates and make sure the cans are not dented or expanding due to air getting in.

Opened Cans:
– Once opened, SPAM should be refrigerated promptly in an airtight container.
– Opened SPAM will last 7-10 days in the refrigerator. Some sources suggest consuming it within 4-5 days to err on the side of caution.
– For short-term storage of 4-5 days, you can leave SPAM in the original can, covered with plastic wrap or foil.

Freezing SPAM:
– To extend the shelf life further, you can freeze SPAM for up to 2-3 months. We use our freezer for food storage, while some feel it is not a good idea.
– Remove SPAM from the can, slice or keep whole, wrap securely to prevent freezer burn, and place in an airtight container or freezer bag before freezing.
– Thaw frozen SPAM in the refrigerator before use.

The longer shelf life of unopened SPAM is due to the sodium nitrite preservative, which prevents fat oxidation and bacterial growth.

However, once opened, SPAM becomes perishable and must be handled properly to avoid spoilage.

As you build your emergency food supply, don’t forget to include the ever-reliable SPAM. Its versatility, shelf-stability, and undeniable tastiness make it a must-have for any prepared household.
